About this quest

The Dragon on a Chain is a free treasure hunt for families in old Metz: starting at the cathedral, kids follow the Graoully dragon's trail across six stops.

Legend says a terrible dragon once lived in the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre, until Saint Clement tamed it. On this scavenger hunt, children look for real clues carved in stone: the saint holding the dragon on a chain at the cathedral's Portal of the Virgin, the oldest known carving of the Graoully hidden on a narrow house, and a huge dragon hanging above Rue Taison. At each stop, they answer a simple observation question and discover a short story about the history of Metz.

The route climbs to the Sainte-Croix hill, the highest point of the old town, then passes the corner where the writer Rabelais once lived. Finally, the quest ends under the medieval arcades of Place Saint-Louis, where the mystery of the dragon is finally solved. It is a relaxed way to discover the old centre and one of the easiest things to do with kids in Metz.

How long does it take? About 40 minutes, with 6 stops and around 1.2 km of walking.

From what age? Best for children aged 7 and up. Younger kids can play with a little help from an adult.

Do I need to book? No booking is needed. Just open the app and start in front of the cathedral.
